Case StudySteve’s Journey:
From “Man in the Roof” to a New Chapter
At Solo Housing, we know that every person’s journey is unique. For some, it’s a short step from temporary accommodation to independent living. For others, it’s a winding path shaped by loss, resilience, and rediscovery. Steve’s story is one of those journeys — a tale of grief, determination, and hope, guided by supportive housing and an understanding team.
From Loss to Homelessness
Steve, 64, is an electrician by trade and someone who has faced challenges many could never imagine. Five years ago, his world was shattered by the death of his son. The grief was overwhelming, and for a time, Steve couldn’t work, manage responsibilities, or even cope with day-to-day life. He turned to alcohol, lost his home and business, and found himself homeless.
During this difficult period, Steve moved between friends’ sofas and temporary accommodation — including a converted barn with no heating — but his mental health continued to decline. It was then, in 2023, after speaking to a social prescriber, that he was recommended to Solo Housing.
Finding a Place to Call Home
Solo Housing placed Steve in a one-bedroom house in Dereham. This first Solo home provided the stability he needed, and for two years, he began to rebuild his life with support from colleagues. However, when the property needed to be returned to its owner, Steve was ready for the next step: moving to Diss, a seven-bed unit where he took the top room — earning the affectionate nickname “Man in the Roof.”
From January to November 2025, Steve settled into life at Diss. The top room, with its great view, became a sanctuary where he could find peace, reflect, and rediscover his passions. The team at Diss supported him every step of the way, helping with practical tasks like bills, rent, and navigating benefits, as well as offering emotional encouragement.
Rediscovering Passions and Independence
Having his own space meant everything to Steve — a little isolation, he jokes, but mostly freedom. He rediscovered his love for photography, framing his favourite shots of flowers, dead trees, and landscapes in black-and-white or colour, and preparing them to hang in his new home. Steve’s eye for detail is exceptional, and he hopes to get a compact digital camera to enhance his hobby further.
He also began a computer course, learning skills from CV writing to mock interviews, preparing to re-enter work and engage with the wider community again. Weekly therapy sessions in Norwich have helped him process long-standing trauma from his childhood — including time spent living abroad, family instability, and other challenges — and have supported him in developing coping strategies for the future.
Steve is quietly ambitious. He wants to work with people again, find connection, and continue his journey towards independence, all while maintaining the stability that a safe home provides.
Stepping Stones to a Brighter Future
In November 2025, Steve moved on from Diss into a 55+ independent housing scheme. This stepping-stone home provides both safety and the freedom to continue rebuilding his life. The team at Diss ensured he was ready to move on, packing up his memories, helping with the logistics of the transition, and celebrating the progress he’s made.
Steve’s story is a testament to the power of stable housing, compassionate support, and personal determination. It’s also a reminder of the quiet, human-centred work that Solo Housing team at Diss do every day — creating spaces where people can heal, grow, and look forward to the future.
